Like many others, Gareth Evans's The Raid was a gateway for us into the incredible world of Indonesian action films. For what used to feel like a bygone era, these movies simultaneously conjure up nostalgia for '70s and '80s kung fu films while also transcending the genre entirely, and Timo Tjahjanto's The Night Comes for Us pushes what we thought those movies could be to the absolute extreme. Body horror by way of punches and stabbings, this film is relentless.
